The Software Management Experts

SET/TURN (AS/SET® Interface)

SET/TURN, our TurnOver/ AS/SET® Interface, lets you manage AS/SET applications with the TurnOver Change Management system. Your definitions are checked out of a production set into a development set, then changed and promoted just like other iSeries or AS/400 objects and source. SET/TURN's extensive features provide for a more productive AS/SET development environment. (Read more about our AS/SET cross-reference tool.)

Using TurnOver's Worklist Manager

SET/TURN lets you analyze and change AS/SET objects and native code on the same Worklist. Functions such as source-compare, cross-reference and version management are fully supported with SET/TURN. With SET/TURN, your staff will be productive quickly. Whether your development and production is on the same computer or separate computers, your AS/SET objects will be installed reliably, every time.

Developers will appreciate the extent to which SET/TURN automates the process. SET/TURN handles the modification of all data library names within the data model during checkout, thus eliminating the problems that occur when definitions are copied between application sets.

Setup

All AS/SET object types are defined to TurnOver. SET/TURN supports all AS/SET types: Field, File, Audit Trail, Action Subroutine, Data Model, Display program, Batch program, Report program and AS/SET help. These are activated for you during installation of SET/TURN.

AS/SET applications are described to TurnOver as application definitions, the same way your 3GL applications are defined. Any number of development steps (development-to-test, test-to-QA, and so on) are supported. Model application definitions are provided to help you quickly create your own application definitions.

If you distribute changes using TurnOver now, no additional setup is required to distribute AS/SET objects. If you are new to TurnOver, distribution to one or more production systems can be done efficiently and quickly.

Using the SET/TURN Interface

Analyze your AS/SET definitions

You can analyze AS/SET definitions easily using SET/TURN's definition compare and cross-reference facilities. Once you identify the definitions you need, just add them to your Worklist.

Browse the definitions on your Worklist without starting up an AS/SET session and without opening the definition for update. Want to compare action diagrams to see what changed last time? SET/TURN comes with a compare utility.

Security

Only people specifically authorized to TurnOver can work with AS/SET applications. Authorize each developer to just those AS/SET applications and SET/TURN functions that are appropriate.

Checkout definitions

Checkout AS/SET definitions, interactively or in batch, and start to work. You can register new definitions simply by adding them to your Worklist and checking them out. SET/TURN guarantees that the definition name is unique and gives you a lock on the name. Checkout gives you a record of which definitions each developer is working on. Checkout history can be viewed any time. There is also an emergency change feature, used when you need to fix a production object now in revision.

Make AS/SET code changes

Select any definition on your Worklist and modify it, just as you would normally. After testing in the development set, you are ready to promote to a test environment for further testing, or back into production, as desired.

Build a promotion request

Once you are satisfied with your changes, select the definitions you want to promote and submit a TurnOver promotion job. You can schedule it to run any time. When a promotion runs, AS/SET definitions are exported from your development set into the target set. iSeries objects are generated into your target application libraries. SET/TURN's cross-reference system protects you from the likelihood of level checks.

If any problems occur during the promotion, changes can be rolled back automatically. You can even roll back changes after they are installed, if necessary.

Distribute AS/SET objects

Your iSeries objects and, conditionally, AS/SET definitions can be distributed to any number of production computers automatically, as soon as a promotion completes successfully; or the distribution can be scheduled to run later. When production computers are connected directly to your development computer, TurnOver will send back confirmation messages and update the status on your development computer.

Support

SET/TURN uses standard AS/SET ADK processes and TurnOver APIs. SET/TURN is AS/SET 6.04 and TurnOver 5.3 compatible.
