TurnOver ADM Migration
Upon the release of V5R2, IBM announced it will withdraw its ADM change management (CM) product from marketing as a way to encourage its customers to adopt CM tools that support new technologies. In conjunction with this announcement, IBM asked SoftLanding Systems to provide a plan for ADM customers to upgrade to the TurnOver Change Management system. By following this plan, ADM customers can establish a reliable process for managing critical new development initiatives, including WebSphere application development, as quickly and easily as possible.
ADM-to-TurnOver Migration Package
SoftLanding's ADM Migration Package includes: thorough documentation of the migration process, a free Migration Toolkit to help automate the process, 5 days' migration and training services, the industry's most responsive tech support, and full trade-in allowance for your ADM license* towards your TurnOver license.
"We have seen TurnOver's ability to manage development from within the WebSphere IDE, and we're confident it can meet the needs of most customers. The sooner ADM users migrate to a tool that supports WebSphere development and the IFS, the sooner they'll be able to fully leverage new technology."
Dave Slater, World-wide Market Manager iSeries Application Development, IBM
An Introduction to TurnOver
TurnOver's project-driven change management system brings structure, automation, and risk control to your development process. From its foundation of reliable source and object control, it has grown to support automated promotions, auditable change history for source and objects, promotion recovery, application deployment to remote systems, version control, project management, and more. Individual users can choose from its native Windows graphical user interface or its standard 5250 user interface. TurnOver's modularity makes it easy to implement and easy to learn.
TurnOver's evolution has tightly paralleled advances in technology, allowing users to leverage new technology as quickly as possible. It was the first change management product to:
- manage Java and other objects stored in the IFS (May 1999)
- offer TCP/IP support (October 1997) and FTP support (September 2001)
- integrate with WebSphere Studio IDEs through its Version Manager plug-in (March 2002)
- provide change management plug-ins for iSeries development (March 2003)
- earn "Ready for WebSphere Studio" validation from IBM for iSeries support (May 2003)
Important highlights include:
Single process efficiency
TurnOver lets you handle virtually all your application development with a single process. As iSeries applications become more modular and add components built with non-traditional technologies, TurnOver's unified approach to development lets IT organizations focus on designing and improving competitive applications, not managing them.
Manage any type of application
TurnOver handles changes to applications written in RPG/COBOL/CL, ILE, Java, XML, HTML
anything you use for development. It also supports packaged applications such as JD Edwards World and BPCS, and applications built using tools such as LANSA, AS/SET, or AllFusion Plex.
Synchronize new releases
To maintain your changes to vendor software, TurnOver includes Synchronizer, a powerful source compare and merge utility that makes retrofitting your in-house changes into new releases a snap.
Retain current development environment
No matter how unique your environment, TurnOver is flexible enough to quickly and easily adapt to your needs. Plus you can interface with almost any tool you currently use, even Code/400.
Built-in deployment
TurnOver can deploy your applications to iSeries, Windows, or Unix servers, or any FTP-capable server.
Recover production fast
Because of TurnOver's exceptional archiving abilities, you can recover any promotion, in full or in part, on one server or across your network, immediately. No more trouble-shooting while users wait for their application.
WebSphere support
If your Web applications contain RPG/COBOL back-end processing, or if your data is stored on an iSeries, TurnOver will coordinate the development and movement of all related files, ensuring smooth implementations.
Complete change history
You'll use TurnOver's change history to speed up analysis and face audits with confidence.
Relationship with IBM
SoftLanding is an Advanced Member of PartnerWorld for Developers, a Premier Member of the AD Tools Network, and the only vendor to have achieved "Ready for WebSphere Studio" validation on iSeries support.
Comparison of TurnOver and ADM
Although TurnOver offers additional functionality over ADM, most ADM options have direct one-to-one mapping to TurnOver, making it easy for a programmer to reconcile. The following terms illustrate the similarities.

Two significant differences exist between TurnOver and ADM. First, TurnOver applications lie over the top of your existing libraries instead of in special internal libraries, eliminating the need to import and export. Second, TurnOver treats an object and its source as a single entity. You can perform a checkout by either the object name/type or the source member, and both are effectively checked out. Likewise, they are promoted back to production together.
ADM-to-TurnOver Migration Steps
Following is the basic 10-step process our consultants use when migrating your application management from ADM to TurnOver. Many steps can be automated using our free Migration Toolkit. Please refer to the complete ADM Migration Plan for detailed descriptions of each step, and instructions on how and when to use specific tools.
1. Create TurnOver applications and levels
2. Define developers to TurnOver and grant them authority
3. Determine which ADM part types you are currently using
3.1. Assign TurnOver type codes to part types
4. Map ADM project groups to TurnOver application levels
5. Customize creation commands, if necessary
6. Export parts
6.1. Select parts for export
6.2. Run export job
7. Migrate archive
8. Perform TurnOver initial build
9. Assign pre- and post-run commands, if necessary
10. Review work in progress
Migration Toolkit
Our ADM Migration Toolkit consists of several tools that automate some of the more time-consuming migration tasks. Using the toolkit, you can breeze through tasks such as mapping ADM projects to TurnOver applications, reconciling ADM part types with TurnOver type codes, defining how object descriptions will be updated during the export phase, exporting ADM parts into TurnOver, transferring ADM build options to TurnOver global creation commands, and so on.
